Winemaker Interview – La Jarnoterie

We take a few moments to speak to Carine Rezé from La Jarnoterie about how she became involved in winemaking. The vineyard, which is based in the Loire Valley, is brilliantly run by Carine and husband Didier. This region has the perfect terroir (or soil, slope and sun) for growing Cabernet Franc. The wines are made with flair and passion at this immaculate estate. Their deliciously versatile Cuveé Carine, is available to buy in our wine shop.

1. How did you become a winemaker?

I always loved working with my family in the cellars, in the vines and tasting the wines … but I felt the desire to express myself outside the domaine, so I studied at Music Academy and qualified as a Music Teacher. My father developed heart problems … so I accompanied my mother to the wine exhibitions! What a revelation – I loved talking about wine to customers, so I took a business studies course and came home to the domaine! Didier followed me, leaving his first job of carpenter to study wine and return to the domaine!

 

2. What do you like most about your job?

Everything: it is a complete profession: we are real artists: working with the raw material to reveal the flavours … packaging the wine (labels, boxes …)
Presenting it to customers … creating new challenges … walking around the vines on the hillsides and admiring our village in the middle of the vineyards …

 

3. What’s the best wine you’ve made at the vineyard?

You can not ask parents which child they prefer: they are all different and all have their own qualities!

 

4. What’s new at your vineyard?

Our cave has had a makeover, you should come and be surprised!

 

5. Tell us something about yourself that we might not know.

!!??? A little privacy please! We will not tell you everything!
